Radiology Contrast Media Guideline

The following Guideline from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists provides the standard of current practice and useful clinical advice for issues associated with iodinated radiology contrast media.

Some particularly interesting statements, dealing with common sources of confusion, include:-

R3  Use of steroid and oral antihistamine premedication in patients with prior ‘anaphylactic’ reactions;

R16 Use of N-Acetyl Cysteine and/or sodium bicabonate to prevent Acute Kidney Injury is not supported.

R17 &18  Metformin should be withheld for 48 hours in those with pre-existing impaired renal function; in others it may be continued.

R29  No need for breast feeding mothers to cease or express/discard breast milk after iodine contrast
